RIP Old Swimsuits

Sarah Kirsten
February 10, 2023

Wearing my red suit to the beach and remembering that when this TYR suit gets old, I can make another! I got this suit for a triathlon last winter and it quickly became my favorite.

Here’s a tutorial on how to recreate your favorite swimsuit when it wears out.

Here’s my tutorial on how to sew a new swimsuit when it’s time to retire your old one.

Chamomile Crop and Dress Digital Pattern
$14.00

The Chamomile Crop is designed to be a staple basic in your wardrobe — something to be dressed up or down, to serve as a base for layering on cool days, and worn sleeveless on warm days.

The crop version is fully French seamed and uses a wide, double rolled hem for a high quality tank top that feels beautiful next to your skin, thrives in normal wash machine cycles, and lasts for years.

The dress version has large, in seam pockets, flows in the wind, and has a beautiful 1” hem.

The crop pairs well with all your high waisted pants, skirts, and shorts and gives it a playful feel. The silhouette is thoughtfully designed to not flare at the waist but to hang straight down in a slim profile from your bust.

The Chamomile comes with two shoulder/neck views - Wide Shoulder and Narrow Shoulder. The Wide Shoulder has a higher front and back neckline, and lots of coverage on your shoulders. The Narrow Shoulder has a lower front and back neckline to let the sunshine hit you, and slim straps that favor the outer edge of your shoulders to perfectly hide your bra straps.

Simple, step-by-step illustrated instructions walk you through how to sew the French seams, the bias tape around the neckline and armholes, and the double rolled hem, and the pockets, and skirt gathering for the dress version.

This is a graded pattern that comes with a print at home, a US 36” copy shop version, and an A0 copy shop version.

Fabric notes: Works best with lightweight to midweight woven fabrics that have a good amount of drape such as sandwashed rayon or linen, linen and rayon blends, and homespun cotton.

Rosemary Wrap Digital Pattern
$12.00

The Rosemary Wrap is a true wrap skirt that sits on your natural waist and hugs and shows off your beautiful curves. It overlaps just the right amount to give you security and peace of mind even on windy days.

This pattern is designed to have most of the difference between your full hip circumference (bum) and your natural waist taken up by four elegantly positioned darts, and the remaining 2” (5 cm) or so taken up by pulling the ties tightly around your waist, causing beautiful drag lines to appear. It’s easy to grade between sizes and the wrapping nature makes it easy to get the right fit for your own body.

The Rosemary Wrap is delightfully quick to cut out and sew. It uses only two pattern pieces - the skirt and the waist tie. It wraps around and hugs you with pure fabric - no buttons or zippers.

The pattern comes with a curved hem and square hem option. Both options have lengthen/shorten lines to help you fine tune the length for your unique body and preference.

The instructions walk you through how to achieve a beautiful hem along a curve, and a clever, easy way to attach waist ties that are sharp and tidy.

Wearing this skirt feels like wrapping yourself up tightly in handmade love and care that brings a confidence as you walk boldly into the world. It’s a skirt that reminds you, “I am who I am” as you tackle the joys and trials of each day.
